Integrated industrial energy systems

Call Module 2026-09: Integrated industrial energy systems

Joint call 2026

Accelerating integrated, low-carbon solutions in industrial energy systems will play a central role in achieving climate neutrality while maintaining European competitiveness and energy security.

This call module supports research and innovation on the development and demonstration of integrated solutions for climate-neutral industrial production at industrial sites. Solutions should reduce direct process emissions by increasing electrification, enabling the use of renewable energy and hydrogen, and improving efficiency. This will strengthen the role of industry as a flexible part of the energy system.

Projects may address integrated industrial energy systems through one or more of the following pathways:

  • Fuel switching and alternative feedstocks: Replacement of fossil fuels with renewable alternatives such as green hydrogen and e-fuels, including new process routes.
  • Electrification of industrial processes: Deployment of electrified technologies for high-temperature and energy-intensive processes.
  • Carbon capture and utilisation (CCU): Capture of CO₂ and conversion into chemicals or long-lasting products, including integration with hydrogen-based processes.
  • Resource efficiency and industrial symbiosis: Use of alternative feedstocks, waste heat recovery and exchange of energy and materials across industrial processes.
  • Digitalisation and flexibilisation: Digital energy management, optimisation of energy and material flows, and flexible use of electricity, including integration with storage.

Projects should demonstrate measurable progress towards climate-neutral industrial production, including reduced direct emissions, improved resource efficiency, and increased system flexibility. Projects should also demonstrate integrated system solutions at industrial site level, with clear potential for scale-up, replication, and progress towards commercial readiness.

Projects are expected to:

  • End at TRL 5 or higher
  • Industrial involvement is mandatory. Participation of an end user is encouraged.

This call module complements Call Module 8, which focuses on integrated regional energy systems. Projects addressing integrated industrial energy systems at a single-site level should apply under this call module, Call Module 9.
