TRI 5: Integrated regional energy systems

Accelerating the energy transition where people live, work and connect

TRI 5 supports research and innovation projects that develop, demonstrate and validate integrated regional energy solutions capable of accelerating the clean energy transition.

Projects may address regional energy planning, renewable energy integration, infrastructure coordination, flexibility services, digital platforms, interoperability and stakeholder engagement. Particular attention is given to solutions that can be replicated across different regional environments and contribute to long-term energy resilience.

The initiative also supports collaboration between local and regional actors, helping to strengthen knowledge exchange, improve planning processes and accelerate practical implementation. Through initiatives such as regional living labs and collaborative networks, TRI 5 helps regions test and scale innovative approaches to the energy transition.

Expected Impact

• Faster regional energy transitions
• Increased deployment of renewable energy
• Improved energy system flexibility and resilience
• Stronger stakeholder participation
• Enhanced interoperability and digital integration
• Better regional energy planning
• Scalable and replicable solutions across Europe
