About the project

The primary ambition of SUSGREEN is to develop an integrated, cost-effective methodology for converting CO2 into synthetic renewable fuels for the aviation and shipping sectors. The specific objectives are:

  1. Develop a decentralized CO2 capture unit: Create a compact, remotely controlled membrane unit for separating CO2 from biogas or flue gas, aiming to reduce capture costs by 40% compared to conventional techniques.
  2. Intensify algae production: Demonstrate a novel algae growth and purification process using the separated CO2, utilizing nanobubble systems and membrane purification to maximize feedstock yields.
  3. Optimize Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL): Develop an efficient HTL process to convert algal biomass into bio-crude using novel nanostructured catalysts and supercritical CO2 as a solvent, operating at lower pressures than current standards.
  4. Ensure scalability and sustainability: Deliver cost-effective technologies suitable for pre-commercial investment, validated by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to ensure greenhouse gas reduction.
  5. Commercial feasibility: Provide a preliminary economic feasibility study and business plan to support scaling up to a commercial level.
