Sustainable chalcogenide thin films for low power photovoltaics

ENPOWER aims to drive innovation in IPV and IoT, by developing advanced PV materials beyond conventional silicon. This aligns well with EU policies promoting sustainable energy solutions and digital transformation. The project aims to enhance energy efficiency, lower costs and improve the scalability of thin film IPV technologies using 4 families of materials: CdTe, kesterite, Sb chalcogenide and elemental Se.

About the project

The project addresses the following specific objectives (SO’s):

  • Establishing a classification of IoT devices based on real situations corresponding to typical residential, industrial and office environments, and depending on factors such as power requirements, positioning, illumination conditions and surface area.
  • Understanding of the performance limiting factors under indoor light (i.e. low injection) from modelling and definition of a complete methodology for the characterisation of PV device under indoor conditions.
  • Design and development of optimized chalcogenide (CdTe, kesterite, Sb2S3) solar cells for indoor PV
  • Testing under real world operational conditions of an encapsulated low power PV chalcogenide harvester for an IoT system and benchmarking with a-Si.
  • Determine the environmental and Life Cycle Cost performance of chalcogenide technologies.
