Resilient Energy System Infrastructure Layouts for Industry, E-Fuels and Network Transitions

The main objective of the RESILIENT project is to develop a multi-vector energy infrastructure planning tool that addresses the uncertainties in the energy sector at both national and European levels. The tool, based on the existing European energy system model PyPSA-Eur, will optimise the integration of various energy vectors such as electricity, biomass, hydrogen and derivatives.

The main objective of the RESILIENT project is to develop a multi-vector energy infrastructure planning tool that addresses the uncertainties in the energy sector at both national and European levels. The tool, based on the existing European energy system model PyPSA-Eur, will optimise the integration of various energy vectors such as electricity, biomass, hydrogen and derivatives. This project aims to enhance the representation of industry transformation, biomass usage, carbon management, and global trade of e-fuels, ensuring sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure planning for Europe.

We will build on the existing widely used, open-source, sector-coupled energy planning tool for Europe, PyPSA-Eur, and add stochastic optimisation capabilities as well as a deeper representation of industry transformation, e-fuel conversion, biomass and carbon capture infrastructure. We will look at uncertainties that include the cost of fuels and technologies; hydrogen availability; network expansion delays for electricity, hydrogen and carbon dioxide; value chain restructuring in industry; imports of e-fuels and secondary materials; renewables build-out; and social acceptance.

The RESILIENT project is expected to produce several key outcomes: an advanced multi-vector energy planning tool, open datasets on industry transformation and global e-fuel supply chains and detailed demonstration studies for various European regions. These results will facilitate the planning of resilient and sustainable energy systems, provide actionable insights for policy makers and industry stakeholders and support Europe’s transition to a net-zero emissions economy. The open-source nature of the tools and data will enhance transparency and foster widespread adoption and collaboration.
