About the project
REBUILT project aims to 1) identify, 2) assess and 3) demonstrate the solutions for refurbishing buildings to accelerate the decarbonization of the heating sector while increasing energy system flexibility. The focus is on heat supply through next generation, low-temperature DH, but the project outcomes will similarly improve the efficiency of virtually any heat supply, e.g., individual ground source HPs. Furthermore, while the emphasis is on existing building stock, the solutions are fully applicable to new buildings.
The addressed challenges of REBUILT project are currently suboptimal solutions by different stakeholders, gaps in potential for technological integration, data deficiency and related modelling limitations, and barriers for deployment. The approach to go beyond the state of art includes TRL advancement by demonstrations, systemic perspective in different operational environments within selected partner countries, assessment of benefits in a multi-stakeholder system and stakeholder engagement, related business models and utilisation of human-centric frameworks.
The results of the project include a smart DH substation design, gains in systemic efficiency due lower DH supply temperatures, scalable building refurbishment options that are mature for market uptake and their impacts/benefits on overall DH system development. The main targeted impact is the realisation of the potential of district heating systems as one of the solutions for the decarbonization of the European heating sector.
