About the project

Future energy systems with up to 100% renewable energy will need new ways to stay stable. Storage, flexible loads, and smarter control will be essential. As a result, “resilience” is becoming more important than traditional robustness. Resilience means detecting and predicting disruptions, reacting quickly to maintain a safe (even if sub‑optimal) operating state, and recovering fast.

High shares of variable renewables make energy systems more vulnerable to issues like extreme weather, congestion, voltage problems, or cyberattacks. Even flexible systems offer only seconds—not minutes—for operators to respond, as shown by events like the Continental Europe grid split. To support fast decision‑making, new automated tools are required.

ProRES introduces a proactive resilience approach to help operators manage systems with large-scale renewable integration. Reactive actions alone are no longer enough. ProRES will combine improved event prediction with decision‑support tools for complex situations and create learning frameworks where operators and AI systems improve together based on past events.
