About the project

The project aims to minimise the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCoH) by proposing an optimal hybrid supercapacitor/battery energy storage system design. Using advanced optimisation and techno-economic analysis, the design will determine the optimal type and size of electrolyzers (Alkaline or PEM) alongside storage units. A modular system architecture will be developed, where each electrolyzer or storage unit connects to the DC grid via a dedicated DC/DC converter, reducing maintenance costs in offshore applications. To enhance reliability and flexibility, a decentralized distributed control scheme with communication-enabled control agents will ensure stable operation despite failures. An intelligent energy management algorithm will further reduce LCoH and component degradation by dynamically optimising operation based on renewable forecasts, system constraints, and degradation costs. Finally, the approach will be validated through simulations and hardware-in-the-loop demonstrations.
