About the project

The HyFlow project, co-funded by Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) of the European Union and local agencies, aims at intensifying alkaline electrolysis. Our consortium brings together high-level partners: three companies, one research center and one university, towards realisation of our new technology at the industrial level.

The overall objective of the HyFlow project is to significantly reduce investment and electricity costs of alkaline water electrolysis by demonstrating Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)-like performance in an alkaline electrolysis stack for accelerating the clean energy transition.

This will be achieved by flow-engineering of porous transport electrodes (PTEs) and advanced electrode coatings. The effect has been demonstrated by UCLouvain on cell level in laboratory conditions (TRL 3). The aim is to accelerate the time required to bring this scientific result to market by making use of existing pilot facilities at IFAM, UCLouvain, and Stargate, thus validating the technology in a relevant environment (TRL 5). HyFlow also addresses multiple cross-cutting dimensions, such as techno-economic analyses, monitoring and safety aspects, and integration with intermittent power sources.
