About the project

PandORA is a 3-year project that aims to demonstrate electrified, retrofittable CO2 capture technologies for hard-to-abate sectors, with a focus on cement and power. By replacing fossil-based heat with decarbonized electricity, the project seeks to reduce energy use, costs, and emissions, accelerating the path to climate neutrality by 2050.

PandORA will:
1. Advance and assess electrified CO2 capture technologies (e-CESAR1, Hyperion, electrified calciners).
2. Reduce energy use and fossil fuel dependence
3. Achieve competitive performance, targeting an electricity demand of ~400 kWh? per ton of CO2 captured, and identifying scenarios where electrified capture is cost-competitive (±15%) with natural-gas-based CESAR1.
4. Reduce environmental impact, lowering amine emissions below 100 ppbv and validating CO2 conditioning models.
5. Demonstrate advanced process integration, including CESAR1 solvent reclaiming via electrodialysis at TRL 7.
6. Innovate cement production, initiating a hybrid calciner targeting 10% clinker cost reduction, and designing a fully electrified calciner capable of reducing fuel consumption by 60% across the cement process.
