About the project
LogiCCS aims to develop sustainable, cost- and energy-efficient maritime infrastructure for transporting captured CO2 in the Nordic and Baltic region. The project will design optimized cross-border logistics networks, assess and compare geological storage options, and develop technical guidelines for liquid CO2 (LCO2) vessels. By integrating ship design, storage analysis, regulatory assessment and sustainability screening, LogiCCS will deliver a multi-criteria decision-support toolbox to guide policymakers, industry and investors. The project supports large-scale CCS deployment by enabling resilient, scalable and economically viable CO2 transport systems aligned with EU climate targets.
CCS scale-up in the Nordic-Baltic region is constrained by fragmented regulation, limited storage accessibility, uncertain cross-border governance, and underdeveloped maritime CO2 logistics. Existing studies typically assess isolated parts of the value chain and rely on simplified cost models. LogiCCS goes beyond the state of the art by integrating dynamic multi-period optimization, advanced ship design modelling (including CFD and sloshing analysis), onboard carbon capture feasibility, storage competitiveness screening, and scenario-based sustainability assessment. A Policy Lab approach will co-develop regulatory solutions, while a multi-criteria decision toolbox will incorporate risk, business models and environmental impacts to enable robust system-level decisions.
