About the project
The overall objective of BIOCUF is to demonstrate CO2 capture using a combination of carbonic anhydrase (CA) and formate dehydrogenase (FDH) in a phase-change solvent solution and to simultaneously transform the captured CO2 into formate.
BIOCUF advances the energy transition by validating a TRL 5 capture system that reduces energy needs by ~45% and equipment size by 90%. By leveraging low-temperature (<60°C) industrial waste heat, it minimizes operational costs and resource intensity. The project champions a circular economy by converting CO2 into formate—a stable, high-density liquid energy carrier and valuable chemical precursor. This offers a closed-loop storage solution superior to hydrogen in safety and logistics.
Environmentally, BIOCUF reduces solvent waste and emissions, directly advancing UN SDGs 8, 9, 12, 13, and 14. It promotes decarbonization and responsible production while minimizing harmful chemical exposure. Societally, it improves local living conditions and fosters CCUS education. Impact is maximized through CETPartnership mechanisms, ensuring effective commercialization, upscaling, and dissemination of this sustainable industrial concept.
